The Future of Security System Monitoring

On Managed Services, Security Systems

Some 20 + years ago the traditional alarm “dialler” was invented. This add on to a security control panel enabled systems to phone in and report an alarm to a monitoring station. This progressed to more detailed reporting and a unique language “contact ID” was developed and adopted by security system manufacturers so we could decipher events and read different types of alarm conditions.

There have been several high security monitoring services such as direct line and securitel, but as the infrastructure was shut down so was the service. GSM systems have proven themselves unreliable and are also now a thing of the past and now only occasionally used as a back up.

Now we are faced with a new challenge – the digital age. VoIP systems are increasing popular with businesses and homes and offer significant cost savings. If you’re asking what is VoIP heres a link to anarticle from Greenlight that explains it well.  The NBN will also see the demise of the anologue phone line so we are left with the question.. what will happen to all the security systems out there? And why is no one talking about it?

The NBN Co have talked about it and still can not confirm if security systems will work on the NBN. If your security provider still has you on a dialler system and  is not talking to you about it there is a good chance they may be getting “rebates” on your calls to their 1300 number, and don’t want to let go of that revenue for as long as possible.

So what is the future? IP security monitoring of course, and it’s here now. It may take a little while for the security system manufacturers to start building these into their systems, at the moment we still have to add on the IP communicator. We will see this happen as demand increases and security companies say goodbye to their rebates. GPRS is another option where companies have strict IT policies and do not allow connection to their network, otherwise it is normally used for the back up path.
